You Need The Right Bike Helmet To Fit

You Need The Right Bike Helmet To Fit And Protect Your Head

Bike helmets may not be fashionable or stylish, but they are extremely important. The right choice will protect your head when you fall off or get into a bicycle accident. Helmet safety is a realistic concern. Accidents happen more frequently than you think. Even if you have never been in an accident, it is better to be protected just in case. Wearing a helmet could mean the difference between a serious injury and a minor injury. The choice is up to you.

The truth is that wearing one is only part of the answer. You need the right one to properly fit and protect your head. Fortunately, the proper selection isn’t as difficult as you may think. The first thing you need to do is to make sure that the one you are purchasing meets the required safety standards. These standards are provided by the Consumer Product Safety Commission and available to read online. Once you are aware of the safety standards, you can begin examining it a bit more closely. Does it have a smooth and protective plastic shell? Is the shell durable? These are important questions to ask. You will also want to make sure that the deepest part of the shell is at the back top of your head in case you fall backwards or topple upside down.

Try the helmet on. Does is fit snugly on your head? Does it have an adjustable strap that will allow you to loosen or tighten it? It will only work well if you are wearing it properly. A choice that is too loose and that slides back and forth on your head will not protect your head from a fall. You can measure this easily by shaking your head back and forth. If it moves, then it is too loose. Tighten it at the back and also tighten the chinstrap. The chinstrap will help keep it from flying off of your head when you fall. All in all, the helmet should feel comfortable on your head.

There are different styles. Some are made specifically for kids, others are more aerodynamic for bike racing, and some come with vents in order to keep your head cool and ventilated. They also come in a variety of colors. You can purchase a color that fits your style, but bear in mind that a bright and vibrant color is better suited for individuals who prefer to ride at night. Some even come with built-in reflectors.  When you a purchase one that fits well, meets the required safety standards and offers enough protection, then you can rest assured that you will be properly protected the next time you take your bike out for a ride. If you plan to transport your bike from place to place, you may want to invest in a good bicycle trailer as well.
